The effects of thalidomide on new born infants.

Dear Health Digest,
I have just a comment/question that I would like to ask. I am a female born in 1961 living in Perth Western Australia and over the years I have heard many bad reports about the usage of the drug thalidomide when taken by pregnant women. However, I was told by my mother that shortly after my birth, a relative of hers informed her of the benefits of giving this drug to new born infants. Which my mother apparantly gave me, she told me it was used to "settle babies down" I was just wondering how many other mothers throughout the western world may have done the same thing, which may have gone unreported. I definitely have some dental deformities, (missing 2nd teeth) etc, that I appear to have passed on to my 3 children, amongst a couple of other things. Has any research been done into the effects of thalidomide on new born babies?
I would appreciate anything related to the topic that you can offer me.
Regards,
Jackie B.
