1.) My adult son struggles with ADHD and acknowledges that Adderall appears to be most effective for his need to focus and multi-task. He likes the XR version which does not have the sudden "drop off" symptoms when the medication wears off, however, he would like something that does not last so long. He dislikes taking medications in general and would like something that would just help him during the 4-5 hours period that he attends college classes or the other 4 or 5 hour period later in the evening that he'll study. He does not like being so "focused", "serious", "intent" for 8+ hours at a time. He does not like the risk of not being able to sleep if he takes it to study in the evening. What do you recommend he consider?

2.) I am also a clinical social worker in a community mental health agency. The children I work with also need something that can help them focus and stay on task at school as well as afterwards in the evening when they need to study, work on homework and interact appropriately with family. Some students find themselves unable to sleep if they take a stimulant too late in the day - yet they cannot focus or behave appropriately if it wears off too soon. Are you aware of something that I can discuss with my medical team that addresses their needs?

Again, thank you for your thoughts on this.

Thank you.

Kathy Boyd
