Allergic reaction to pyrantel pamoateBy Kennette Day from Richardson, TX on November 26, 2005 Category: Pyrantel pamoate On 10/20/05, I took a dose of Pin-X (2 and 1/2 tsp = recommended dose for a person weighing 113 -137 lbs). Approximately 5 hours after taking Pin-X (pyrantel pamoate), I experienced vomiting x 2, diarrhea (small amount), headache, and dizziness. The following morning, I had a metallic taste in my mouth, headache, sternum pain, pain in left and right breasts, dizziness, sore throat, and trouble urinating. The day after that , I had itchy face, scalp, ears, neck, arms and legs. I felt like every hair follicle on my scalp and body was itching and on fire. The dizziness continued. I had trouble urinating, and I had a foul body odor. For the next few days, I continued to be dizzy, had a foul body odor and felt nauseous. My teeth hurt from clenching my jaws, and my gums bled. I telephoned my primary care physician and pharmacist, and they agreed that I had a "little" reaction to the Pin-X. Lots of tiny hairs started to grow on the vertex of my scalp, and eventually the hair on the top of my head fell out (from the vertex down the midline of my scalp). White "things" were coming out of each pore on my face along with tiny whiskers. There was peach fuzz growing on the sides of my face near the hairline. As the days and nights went by, I had other physiological manifestations: pain in the sternum, pain in the ribs under my right breast, constipation for 12 days, earache, pain on right and left sides with more intense pain on the left side, general abdominal pains, sharp cramping pains in my right side (similar to getting a "stitch" in my side when I jog), tingling sensations on left cheek under my eye that ended with a sharp pain, the skin on my body and scalp tingled , and pain at my joints and left knee. I occasionally had ringing in my ears. On around the 8th night, I had "charlie horse" type cramps in my left calf. The calf pain quickly traveled down to my left achilles tendon, then down to the big toe on my left foot. When the cramp hit my big toe, the toe was pulled down sharply and then twisted to the right. My remaining four toes, were forced into the air in an unnatural position. My left calf twisted, as the contortions of the toes stopped and started. This probably lasted about 7-8 minutes. I couldn't do anything but scream. I was laying back in the recliner in our den, and my husband did not respond immediately to my screams as he thought that the screams were coming from a television program. During this time, the skin on my arms turned an orangey brown color was a pale halo effect at the bend of my arms. The skin on my scalp, face, ears, arms, and legs dried out (as if I had spent 40 days in the desert without water). I was craving water, and drank about 10 glasses of water a day. I was unable to urinate or defecate. I lost 14 pounds in 10 days. I was constipated for over two weeks (the instructions on the Pin-X package said there was no need to use a laxative), and when I finally had a BM, there was intense pain, burning and itching. I had a large bump on one of my buttocks that burned, hurt and itched in the same manner. There was an area on my right hip, in the subcutaneous tissue, just to the right of my spine, where I had a burning sensation with pain. (The internist said it was probably my sciatic nerve acting up.) I was extremely tired, and had shortness of breath. Also, when I was helping my daughter with her homework, there was a question asking about the first Native American olympian. I realized I was having a problem with my long term memory as I could not recall the name of Jim Thorpe. (Jim Thorpe has been my favorite athlete since early childhood.) I saw several doctors, including a "weekend physician", my primary care physician, 2 different dermatologists and an internist. Each had a different "take" on what was going on with me. Since, I had the synchronous hair growth on my scalp and face, I thought I was having endocrine involvement, but I was told, "No". The concensus was that I had contact dermatitis. and was simply reacting to a new product I had used on my hair a fews day prior to taking the Pin-x dosage. None of the physicians could tell me what was happening or had happened to me. Presently, a small amount of peach fuzz remains on my face (nose included) as does the tiny hairs that come out of every pore along with the white "things" that continue to emerge from the pores on my face. I still have the pain on my right hip just to the right of my spine, and I still have headaches, along with eye and mouth dryness. There remains some skin dryness, but not as pronounced as in the beginning. I still have pain in my left and right breasts, sternum and abdomen, pain in my hands when I try to make a fist, and pain in my wrists and left knee. I still have intense anal pruritus. Today, I have a sore throat, am spitting up something from my lungs, and I can barely talk. I need to ask you, will the physiological manifestations that remain eventually and completely reverse, and if you can recommend a physician, such as a parasitologist, that I can contact. Thank you, Kennette Day |
