How safe is Amoxil if taken when pregnant?

I am 6 weeks pregnant and I have a bad tonsillitis. My doctor knows I am pregnant and he prescribed Amoxil 500 mg 3x a day. Is this really safe to take and are there any other medications that are similar that might be recommended to take while pregnant? Thanks
