Bloating while taking Metformin hydrochloride

I've been taking Metformin for years, and have been having problems with bloating, off and on, for years. I know you're not suppose to just stop taking a drug without your doctor's okay, but there have been times when I didn't take the Metformin, for varied reasons (Lab work, X-rays, surgery, unable to refill right away) that I notice I do not become bloated. I had to be off the drug for about 10 days after surgery, and notice no bloating during the whole time; however, after going back on the drug, within about 3 days, I started bloating again. My doctors have not attributed the bloating to the drug. I tell them that I'm retaining fluid, that I gain weight as quickly as overnight (2-3 lbs) to 3-4 days (up to 10 lbs). It has been attributed to too much salt or sodium in the diet or something else, not the drug. The interesting thing is, I don't do table salt, do not consume alot of processed foods (I'm a avid label reader), and watch my intake of other food & drink items containing sodium, and I am a big water drinker, getting at least 64 oz a day, along with Green Tea and Cranberry juice. As I said, when I stop taking Metformin, the bloating goes away. Can it be causing or attributing to my bloating?
