Category: Niacin

I have had hepC for approxamitly 30 years and diagnoised with Cirrhosis 6 years ago, during gallbladder removal, Pos A B antibodies. I was not and am not now a candidate for therapy because of major depression, and a co-morbid condition possible found on stress test which was unknow to me until I decided to get records. Other DX’s are Perifial neuropathy, early portal hypertension, Pancreatitis, possible COPD, two nodules in lungs (no follow-up ), acid reflux,
CO2 30 21-29 scale

HDL 22 40-60
LDL 70 0-100
AST 77 10-41
ALT 86 15-65

QUESTION

My new Doctor at the VA has put me on 1000 mg. of Niacin (Niaspan-kos). After starting with
500 mg. for 2 weeks and now 1000 mgs. Knowing my HDL is very low, is this amount harmful to
a cirrotic liver? Niacin is hard on me. very sluggish, tired, and one epasode of a rash and occossional small red spots on arms and legs.
