Niacin with a Cirrotic PatientBy JIM from Stuart, FL on June 06, 2006 Category: Niacin I have had hepC for approxamitly 30 years and diagnoised with Cirrhosis 6 years ago, during gallbladder removal, Pos A B antibodies. I was not and am not now a candidate for therapy because of major depression, and a co-morbid condition possible found on stress test which was unknow to me until I decided to get records. Other DX’s are Perifial neuropathy, early portal hypertension, Pancreatitis, possible COPD, two nodules in lungs (no follow-up ), acid reflux, CO2 30 21-29 scale Cholesterol 160 0-200 Triglyceride 339 0-150 HDL 22 40-60 LDL 70 0-100 AST 77 10-41 ALT 86 15-65 <u>QUESTION</u> My new Doctor at the VA has put me on 1000 mg. of Niacin (Niaspan-kos). After starting with 500 mg. for 2 weeks and now 1000 mgs. Knowing my HDL is very low, is this amount harmful to a cirrotic liver? Niacin is hard on me. very sluggish, tired, and one epasode of a rash and occossional small red spots on arms and legs. <u>other medications</u> Gabapentin PTSD Vietnam Serteline " " Librium " " Trazodone " " Baby Aspirin Omeprazole Multivitamin/minererals Folic Acid Thanking you in advance, Jim |
