Classification: Antiacne drug Action/Kinetics: The precise mechanism of action in treating acne is not known, but the drug possesses antimicrobial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Causes a decrease in the thickness of the stratum corneum, a reduction in the number and size of keratohyalin granules, and a reduction in the amount and distribution of filaggrin in epidermal layers. After application, the drug penetrates to the stratum corneum, epidermis, and dermis. A small amount of the drug (4%) is absorbed into the systemic circulation. Uses: Treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris. Contraindications: Ophthalmic use. Special Concerns: Use with caution during lactation. Safety and efficacy have not been determined in children less than 12 years of age. Side Effects: Dermatologic: Pruritus, burning, stinging, tingling, erythema, dryness, rash, peeling, irritation, dermatitis, contact dermatitis, vitiligo depigmentation, small depigmented spots, hypertrichosis, reddening (sign of keratosis pilaris), exacerbation of recurrent herpes labialis (rare). Miscellaneous: Worsening of asthma, allergic reactions. How Supplied: Cream: 20%
