Classification: Benzodiazepine hypnotic

Action/Kinetics: Benzodiazepine derivative. Disturbed nocturnal sleep may occur the first one or two nights following discontinuance of the drug. Prolonged administration is not recommended because physical dependence and tolerance may develop. See also Flurazepam. Peak blood levels: 2-4 hr. t 1/2, initial: 0.4-0.6 hr; final: 10 hr. Steady-state plasma levels: 382 ng/mL (2.5 hr after 30-mg dose). Accumulation of the drug is minimal following multiple dosage. Significantly bound (98%) to plasma protein. Metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.

Uses: Insomnia in clients unable to fall asleep, with frequent awakenings during the night and/or early morning awakenings.

Contraindications: Pregnancy.

Special Concerns: Use with caution in severely depressed clients. Use during lactation may cause sedation and feeding problems in the infant. Geriatric clients may be more sensitive to the effects of temazepam.

Side Effects: CNS: Drowsiness (after daytime use) and dizziness are common. Lethargy, confusion, euphoria, weakness, ataxia, lack of concentration, hallucinations. In some clients, paradoxical excitement (less than 0.5%), including stimulation and hyperactivity, occurs. GI: Anorexia, diarrhea. Other: Tremors, horizontal nystagmus, falling, palpitations. Rarely, blood dyscrasias.

How Supplied: Capsule: 7.5 mg, 15 mg, 30 mg

Dosage

Adults, usual: 15-30 mg at bedtime. In elderly or debilitated clients, initial: 15 mg; then, adjust dosage to response.
