Pregnancy Category: C Actonel (Rx)

Classification: Biphosphonate for Paget's disease

Action/Kinetics: Inhibits osteoclasts, thus leading to decreased bone resorption. Rapidly absorbed; food decreases absorption. t 1/2, initial: 1.5 hr; terminal: 220 hr. Excreted unchanged in the urine.

Uses: Treatment of Paget's disease in those who (1) have a serum alkaline phosphatase level at least two times the upper limit of normal, (2) are symptomatic, or (3) are at risk for future complications from the disease.

Contraindications: Use in those with C CR less than 30 mL/min. Hypocalcemia. Lactation.

Special Concerns: May cause upper GI disorders, including dysphagia, esophagitis, esophageal ulcer, or gastric ulcer. Use with caution in those with a history of UGI disorders. Safety and efficacy have not been determined in children.

Side Effects: GI: Diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, belching, colitis. CNS: Headache, dizziness. Body as a whole: Flu syndrome, chest pain, asthenia, neoplasm. Musculoskeletal: Arthralgia, bone pain, leg cramps, myasthenia. Respiratory: Sinusitis, bronchitis. Ophthalmic: Amblyopia, dry eye. Miscellaneous: Peripheral edema, skin rash, tinnitus.

Overdose Management: Symptoms: Hypocalemia. Treatment: Gastric lavage to remove unabsorbed drug. Milk or antacids to bind risedronate. IV calcium.

Drug Interactions: Antacids, calcium-containing / Absorption of risedronate Bone imaging agents / Risedronate interferes with these agents Calcium / Absorption of risedronate NSAIDs / Possible additive GI side effects

How Supplied: Tablets: 30 mg

Dosage
?Tablets Treat Paget's disease.
Adults: 30 mg once daily for 2 months.
