Action/Kinetics: Obtained from the fruit of various species of plantago. The powder forms a gelatinous mass with water, which adds bulk to the stools and stimulates peristalsis. Also has a demulcent effect on an inflamed intestinal mucosa. Products may also contain dextrose, sodium bicarbonate, monobasic potassium phosphate, citric acid, and benzyl benzoate. Laxative effects usually occur in 12-24 hr. The full effect may take 2-3 days. Dependence may occur.

Uses: Prophylaxis of constipation in clients who should not strain during defecation. Short-term treatment of constipation; useful in geriatric clients with diminished colonic motor response and during pregnancy and postpartum to reestablish normal bowel function. To soften feces during fecal impaction.

Contraindications: Severe abdominal pain or intestinal obstruction.

Side Effects: Obstruction of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and rectum.

Drug Interactions: Do not use concomitantly with salicylates, nitrofurantoin, or cardiac glycosides (e.g., digitalis).

How Supplied: Capsule; Granule; Granule for reconstitution; Powder for reconstitution: 3.4 g/15 mL; Wafer

Dosage
Dose depends on the product. General information on adult dosage follows.
?Granules/Flakes
Adults: 1-2 teaspoons 1-3 times/day spread on food or with a glass of water.
?Powder
Adults: 1 rounded teaspoon in 8 oz of liquid 1-3 times/day.
?Effervescent Powder
Adults: 1 packet in water 1-3 times/day.
?Chewable Pieces
Adults: 2 pieces followed by a glass of water 1-3 times/day.
