Classification: Antiemetic

Action/Kinetics: A hyperosmolar carbohydrate solution containing fructose, dextrose, and orthophosphoric acid with controlled hydrogen ion concentration. It relieves N&V due to a direct action on the wall of the GI tract that decreases smooth muscle contraction and delays gastric emptying time; the effect is directly related to the amount used.

Uses: Symptomatic relief of nausea due to upset stomach from intestinal flu, stomach flu, and food or drink. Investigational: Morning or motion sickness, regurgitation in infants, N&V due to drug therapy or inhaled anesthetics.

Contraindications: Diabetic clients due to the presence of carbohydrates. Individuals with hereditary fructose intolerance.

Special Concerns: Since nausea may be a symptom of a serious condition, a physician should be consulted if symptoms are not relieved or recur often.

Side Effects: GI: Abdominal pain and diarrhea due to large doses of fructose.

How Supplied: Solution: Liquid

Dosage
?Oral Solution Nausea.
Adults: 15-30 mL at 15-min intervals until vomiting ceases; if the first dose is rejected, the same dosage should be given in 5 min. Should not be taken for more than five doses (1 hr). Children, 2 to 12 years: 5-10 mL at 15-min intervals in the same manner as adults.
Regurgitation in infants.
5 or 10 mL, 10-15 min before each feeding; in refractory cases, 10 or 15 mL, 30 min before feeding.
Morning sickness.
15-30 mL on arising; repeat q 3 hr or when nausea threatens.
N&V due to drug therapy or inhalation anesthesia, motion sickness.
Adults and older children: 15 mL; young children: 5 mL.
