Action/Kinetics: Penicillin G is neither penicillinase resistant nor acid stable. The product is a long-acting (repository) form of penicillin in an aqueous vehicle; it is administered as a sterile suspension. Peak plasma levels: IM 0.03-0.05 unit/mL.

Uses: Infections due to penicillin G sensitive microorganisms susceptible to low and prolonged serum levels. Mild to moderate URTI due to susceptible streptococci. Syphilis, yaws, bejel, and pinta. Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever or chorea. Follow-up prophylactic therapy for rheumatic heart disease and acute glomerulonephritis.

Contraindications: IV use.

Additional Drug Interactions: Aspirin, ethacrynic acid, furosemide, indomethacin, sulfonamides, or thiazide diuretics may compete with penicillin G for renal tubular secretion prolongation of serum t 1/2 of penicillin

How Supplied: Injection: 300,000 U/mL, 600,000 U/mL

Dosage
?Parenteral Suspension (IM Only) URTI due to Group A streptococcus.
Adults: 1,200,000 units as a single dose; older children: 900,000 units as a single dose; children under 27 kg: 300,000-600,000 units as a single dose; neonates: 50,000 units/kg as a single dose.
Early syphilis (primary, secondary, or latent).
Adults: 2,400,000 units as a single dose. Children: 50,000 units/kg, up to the adult dose.
Gummas and cardiovascular syphilis.
Adults: 2,400,000 units q 7 days for 3 weeks. Children: 50,000 units/kg, up to adult dose.
Neurosyphilis.
Adults: Aqueous penicillin G, 18,000,000-24,000,000 units IV/day for 10-14 days followed by penicillin G benzathine, 2,400,000 units IM q week for 3 weeks.
Yaws, bejel, pinta.
1,200,000 units in a single dose.
Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis.
Following an acute attack, 1,200,000 units once a month or 600,000 units q 2 weeks.
