bloody nose and period Quote | Reply

I have never had a bloody nose in my entire life (I am 28) but this is the fourth month in a row I have had a bloody nose on the first day of my period. Should I be concerned? Is it merely stress? (I am a full time doctoral student and work full time but have worked full time and been a full time student since I started undergrad, so not much is different, just the bloody noses coupled with my period).
Thanks, Diana

It could be due just to stress or hormonal changes. However, you really should let your GYN and family practioner both know about this condition to rule out other serious conditions. I would have this checked out.

Hey Guest, how are you doing?

I would be helpful for you to keep account with the patterns of your bleeding during your menstural cycle (e.g. counting vaginal tampons or perineal pads) to help your physician assess the amount of blood loss. This is a common practiced by women, although it would not be very helpful unless your count is subjectively accurate, to evaluate excessive blood loss of clinical significance.

Iron deficiency anemia is most common in women who have heavy menstrual periods. Other causes besides blood loss, is nutritional deficits.

Nevertheless, anovulatory (not involving or associated with ovulation) bleeding rather than cyclic ovarian activity are frequently seen in adult women and causes an irrregular menstural bleeding. In the presence of malnutrition, poor dietary habits (common among middle-class American teen-agers), anemias of different etology, and high blood pressure (may occur because of estrogen related bodily changes or temperature), the significance of menstural blood loss should not be overlooked.

Best wishes, Cool
