Is brown rice more nutritous than white?

If it is, why does almost everyone eat white rice? Isn't it more expensive and time consuming to produce white rice than to leave it brown, or is the bran worth more off the kernal than on?

Brown rice is healthier. The husk of the rice contains fiber and minerals that are removed when the rice is processed.

It's true, brown rice has more nutrients than white because both the layer of bran and the germ of the rice are taken off when white rice is milled. I think most people eat white rice just because it's more common--maybe they're even afraid to try brown rice.

In my experience, I think brown rice is drier than white; white seems to fluff up more and retain more water. I think the taste of brown is nutty, and like it a lot, but my husband thinks brown rice doesn't have much flavor, so I only use it in soups or dishes that have a sauce.

It's funny, but now whenever I eat any rice, I think of the T.V. show "Survivor."

Hi Darlene,

You make some good points. Most people probably just like white rice better. They probably like the white color more than brown as it has a more "clean", "pure" look. And maybe most people like the texture more as brown is a little harder and requires a bit more chewing I think. As far as the taste goes, I'm surprised your husband thinks white has more flavor. If anything I would have thought brown had more flavor. To me, white rice actually doesn't have much flavor on it's own. Another thing I just thought of is brown rice takes quite a bit longer to cook, I think.

One thing that seems curious is that brown rice costs a lot more than white. This seems counterintuitive because it takes an extra processing step to make it. One might think brown rice would cost less because it didn't require the hull/germ removal step. Maybe it's because the bran and germ can be sold seperately, so if they don't take it off they add the value of them to the whole grain rice product.

Cheers.

Maybe brown costs more because that makes it look more important and valuable? People would expect white to cost less because it's so commonly used? Just a thought.

Don't want to be pushy, but just in case you're interested in finding out more about fruits, I have an article at http://www.associatedcontent.com/...iest_nutritious.html

Smith makes good point. Brown rice, besides its high fiber content, it contains higher content of minerals and phytochemicals such as antioxidants.

Maybe more people eat white rice because it cooks faster.

White rice just has a better taste to it. It also stay fresh longer and it is easier to ship over places because it keeps longer. It's more versatile when it come to taste. I have eaten both and white rice taste better, even thou brown is healthier.
