Acne or something else? Quote | Reply

I am 20. For several years (5+) I have had moderate but widespread back and chest acne. This involves a lot of red inflamed bumps, and probably also involves some scarring. There have been no or very few blackheads; all or nearly all of the acne takes the form of red inflamed bumps. Sometimes these bumps can be large--1 cm across--and seem to consist of more than one "bump" merged together. The bumps are noticeably raised and if they develop further they usually have a white tip.

But my concern isn't just the acne, which does seem to be going away slowly, but other symptoms which may be related to the acne.

The acne seems to inhibit or be mutually exclusive with the growth of noticeable hair; for a long time I had stomach hair but almost no chest hair, and when I grew more chest hair it coincided with a dramatic reduction of the chest acne. Also I have almost no noticeable back hair and still have moderate back acne (20 or so red welts at a guess). This may be coincidence.

Some time ago (1-2 years) I noticed a patch of increased hair growth on my lower back on one side--about 2-3 inches high and an inch or two wide. There is another similar patch around the front edge of my ribcage. And now I am getting little red spots down my lower back. The new little spots are not raised and are quite small. In the area where they are appearing, there is also itching, which is the same general area as that patch of increased hair growth. There was no itching (or very little) with the other acne. Also when I inspect my back I find a few brown circular "freckles" with hair growing from them. Some of them are raised.

A possibly related symptom. For a long time I have noticed the occasional lump under my skin which usually goes away. From a very long time ago, somewhat before the occurrence of the acne, I have a hard lump in my forearm that is not visible from the outside but can be felt if you pinch the skin. I have had inflamed lymph nodes in my armpits in the past (which may likely be irrelevant), and recently I had a nodule underneath my earlobe that was thick and bound to the skin but that is now mostly gone.

I recently had Lyme disease, which may have triggered something. I am wondering if I have some kind of parasitic infection.

Because there is itching involved in some of these areas, I think you need to see a doctor. Your MD first, and then a Dermatologist. An MD first since you've noticed the lipoma-type bump on your arm..... you definitely need to have some blood work up. Once other possibilities are ruled out, then a Dermatologist can help you get the acne under good control.
