Classification:
Anthelmintic
Action/Kinetics:
Has neuromuscular blocking effect which paralyzes the helminth, allowing it to be expelled through the feces. Also inhibits cholinesterases. Poorly absorbed from GI tract. Peak plasma levels: 0.05-0.13 mcg/mL after 1-3 hr. Partially metabolized in liver. Fifty percent is excreted unchanged in feces and less than 15% excreted unchanged in urine.
Uses:
Pinworm (enterobiasis) and roundworm (ascariasis) infestations. Multiple helminth infections, as it is also effective against roundworm and hookworm.
Contraindications:
Pregnancy. Hepatic disease.
Special Concerns:
Use with caution in presence of liver dysfunction. Safe use in children less than 2 years of age has not been established.
Side Effects:
GI (most frequent): Anorexia, N&V;, abdominal cramps, diarrhea. Hepatic: Transient elevation of AST. CNS: Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia. Miscellaneous: Skin rashes.
Drug Interactions:
Use with piperazine for ascariasis results in antagonism of the effect of both drugs.

Adults and children: One dose of 11 mg/kg (maximum). Maximum total dose: 1.0 g. |
