]Action/Kinetics:
Rapid-acting insulin derived from Escherichia coli that has been genetically altered by the addition of the gene for insulin lispro. Is a human insulin analog created when the amino acids at positions 28 and 29 on the insulin B-chain are reversed. Absorbed faster than regular human insulin. Compared with regular insulin, has a more rapid onset of glucose-lowering activity, an earlier peak for glucose lowering, and a shorter duration of glucose-lowering activity. However, is equipotent to human regular insulin (i.e., one unit of insulin lispro has the same glucose-lowering capacity as one unit of regular insulin). May lower the risk of nocturnal hypoglycemia in clients with type I diabetes. Onset: 15 min. Peak effect: 30-90 min. t1/2: 1 hr. Duration: 5 hr or less.
Uses:
Diabetes mellitus.
Contraindications:
Use during episodes of hypoglycemia. Hypersensitivity to insulin lispro.
Special Concerns:
Since insulin lispro has a more rapid onset and shorter duration of action than regular insulin, clients with type I diabetes also require a longer acting insulin to maintain glucose control. Requirements may be decreased in impaired renal or hepatic function. Use with caution during lactation. Safety and efficacy have not been determined in children less than 12 years of age.
