Classification: Diuretic, thiazide type

Action/Kinetics: Onset: 1-2 weeks after multiple doses. Peak levels: 2 hr. Duration: Up to 8 weeks with multiple doses. t1/2: 14 hr. Nearly 100% is absorbed from the GI tract. Excreted through the kidneys (70% with 7% unchanged) and the GI tract (23%).

Uses: Alone or in combination with other drugs for treatment of hypertension. Edema in CHF.

Special Concerns: Dosage has not been established in children. Geriatric clients may be more sensitive to the hypotensive and electrolyte effects.

How Supplied: Tablet: 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg

Dosage
•Tablets Edema of CHF.
Adults: 2.5 mg as a single dose in the morning. If necessary, may be increased to 5 mg/day after 1 week.
Hypertension.
Adults: 1.25 mg as a single dose in the morning. If the response is not satisfactory after 4 weeks, the dose may be increased to 2.5 mg taken once daily. If the response to 2.5 mg is not satisfactory after 4 weeks, the dose may be increased to 5 mg taken once daily (however, consideration should be given to adding another antihypertensive).
