Classification: Cholinergic blocking agent

Action/Kinetics: t1/2, initial: 1.8 hr; secondary: 9-10 hr.

Uses: Hypermotility and spasms of GI tract associated with irritable colon and spastic colitis, mucous colitis.

Additional Contraindications: Use for peptic ulcer.

Special Concerns: Lower doses may be needed in elderly clients due to confusion, agitation, excitement, or drowsiness.

Additional Side Effects: Brief euphoria, slight dizziness, feeling of abdominal distention. Use of the syrup in infants less than 3 months of age: Seizures syncope, respiratory symptoms, fluctuations in pulse rate, asphyxia muscular hypotonia, coma.

How Supplied: Capsules: 10 mg; Injection: 10 mg/mL; Syrup: 10 mg/1.5 mL; Tablets: 20 mg

Dosage
•Capsules, Syrup, Tablets Hypermotility and spasms of GI tract.
Adults: 10-20 mg t.i.d.-q.i.d.; then, may increase to total daily dose of 160 mg if side effects do not limit this dosage. Pediatric, 6 years and older, capsules or tablets: 10 mg t.i.d.-q.i.d.; adjust dosage to need and incidence of side effects. Pediatric, 6 months-2 years, syrup: 5-10 mg t.i.d.-q.i.d.; 2 years and older: 10 mg t.i.d.-q.i.d. The dose should be adjusted to need and incidence of side effects.
•IM Hypermotility and spasms of GI tract.
Adults: 20 mg q 4-6 hr. Not for IV use.
