Muscular and/or subcutaneous atrophy of Kenalog injection site

In May 2006, I kept an appointment at the local medical clinic for severe allergies (hayever to be precise). I expected a prescription for allergy medicine, but instead she said that she had something better, an allergy shot. She did not tell me what the shot was, what its common use was, or any possible side effects. She simply gave me the shot.

About 3 - 4 weeks ago, I noted that the injection site appeared bruised and had a pea-sized indentation. I started to get worried about it because it was also painful and tender to touch. I was on vacation at the time. My friends noticed it without my prompting and called it my "flesh eating disease."

I went back to facility that gave me the shot, but chose a different doctor. He said that he had no idea why the injection site appeared the way it did. By this time, it was the size of a pingpong ball. He consulted with another doctor who said that I must have received the shot in the wrong location and that it appeared to be either muscle atrophy which will never go away and will worsen, or it is subcutaneous fat shrinkage which may go away in a couple of years, or may get worse.

I am apalled that I had no choice in this. Had I known these side effects, I would have been able to make an informed decision. That is my right as a patient.

Thank you for reviewing my post. Please feel free to contact me.

kenalog shot

My nurse practioner gave me a kenalog injection for my allergies about a month ago. She said it would work better than my normal allergy medicine. She never told me of any side effects though! I started noticing a dark spot and indention on my arm.  The site of the injection keeps getting bigger. Will it ever go away or will it keep getting bigger?
