Not a doctor, but a long-time b.c.-takerWhen you switch from condoms or no birth control at all to hormonal birth control for the first time, it will not be effective until you've gone through your first 7 days of pills. If your doctor instructed you to start on the first Sunday after your period, you can't have unprotected sex until the following Sunday, after you've taken your 7th pill.
