Vecuronium bromide and its use and the risk of an AMIBy Valicia Eisele from Davis, California, USA on April 20, 2006 Category: Vecuronium bromide I am a Registered Nurse in Cardiac Care, I have a patient who claims that she was given Vecuroniun Bromide to her in the pre-op area and went into respiratory arrest and suffered a serious heart attack during the episode. I am trying to corralate the pieces, and I was told that this drug is only used as a paralytic drug under intubation only. Can this situation cause a heart attack, and if so, how? |
National Registered ParamedicHaving provided pre-hospital medicine since 1990 with the last 8 years as a Field Paramedic in multiple systems (private, county, fire, and federal fire) including two high-volume (> 14000 calls per year), I have yet to see any patient suffer an AMI from the useage of this medication. I have and currently still use "Vec" on a prn basis to facilitate extended endo-tracheal intubation time. Typically Anectine is the first line RSI drug but due to its short half-life and the long scene times in the backcountry enviroment due to the Wildland Fire setting, "Vec" has been a great drug. If she states that she suffered any CP or the possiblity of an AMI, I would like to know her past s/s associated with that. Additionally, did her cardiac enzymes change, how about her EKG or pre-surgical and post-surgical 12-Lead? What about her PTT? Most research and from what I have read mainly notes that a possiblity of an increase of ICP or respiratory depression. Which is what we are trying to keep suppressed in a round about way.
