aspiration of phenobarbitalBy Carter Burns from Surprise, Arizona on March 23, 2006 Category: Phenobarbital I would like to know what the possible adverse effects of aspirating a portion of a phenobarb dose might be in the case of a 7 month old infant who is being administered 15 ml of phenobarb twice daily (liquid) orally? The phenobarb has been perscribed for the supression of what are believed to be minor infantile seizures resulting in respiratory depression and blood oxygen depletion. The infant is typically very unwilling to swallow the dose unless forced and seems to choke/gag when the phenobarb is being adminstered. although the dose appears to be swallowed, I am concerned that from time to time some of the liquid is inadvertantly being aspirated. thank you for your attention.
