side effects of TriNessa

depression, mood swings, acne, loss of appetite

Since switching from OTC to TriNessa, I have had depresson, mood swings, acne, and a major loss of appetite. I am planning on switching back to OTC as soon as possible! They say that the ingredients are the same in the generic brand, but why do I have all these side effects??

Nausea on TriNessa

I began TriNessa a month ago and am on my 2nd pill pack. I had previously taken ortho tri-cyclen as well but my pharmacy switched me without even telling me and gave me the generic even though my prescription was for otc! On my first pill pack I began to spot a little a week or 2 before my period and I was quite nauseated for about a week. I got my period as normal and it was pretty regular and I felt much better during it. Now, approaching the 2nd week of my 2nd pill pack, I am feeling nauseated again (stomach just really hurts) and I was wondering if you had this symptoms on TriNessa.

I took TriNessa for six months and just stopped taking it last week. My last pill pack was one of the recalled lot numbers. My periods were normal and after about a month or two I stopped spotting. I have had every side effect listed occur at some point taking this medication. The last month was the worst and I too have an infection. Hopefully now that I have stopped taking the medication it will go away. You may not have the infections after you stop taking the medicine.

yeast and other infections

For the past 6 months...I’ve been having to deal with yeast infections and vaginal strep infections. I had never even heard of a vaginal strep infection, and apparently strep is something everybody has in their vagina. My doctor acted like it wasn’t really a problem, unless I get pregnant. Anyways, I started taking trinessa instead of Ortho because of insurance reasons less than a year ago. I have now had constant yeast infections...having 1 once a month like clockwork. I’m convinced that these infections must have something to do with trinessa. I feel like I’m going nuts because doctors aren’t helping me at all...and now I think I’m just going to switch back to Ortho. I started taking acidophylus twice a day...and that hasn’t gotten rid of the yeast. Ugh.

made me nauseous

I have been using Tri-Nessa for two months. Midway through the third month, I had to quit using it because it was making me so nauseous. It honestly felt like I was having morning sickness, like when I was pregnant. I felt dizzy and nauseous most days. I have also gained weight since beginning on this pill.

having the same exact issues!

Ive been taking Tri-Nessa for about 6 months and the same month I started taking them I started to get really bad yeast infections. At first I was really worried because I thought it was some sort of virus or something...but I didnt know how I would have gotten one....it seemed impossible. When I go to the doctor they just tell me to take over the counter treatments...but I still get an infection every month...pretty much the same day every month....I am very frustrated

I'm not sure which is worse

I agree with all of the above. I am now on my second cycle of pills and I had an extreme case of spotting for a week and now I've started my period a week early. I think the worse part is that I'm sick to my stomach every night at the same time, like clock work. The odd thing is that I take my pill in the moring. My doctor says that this was normal for the first cycle but what about now? Do I want continue on TriNessa and see if it stops?

Side effects of TriNessa

I have been on TriNessa for three months. I was on Ortho-Tricyclen but switched because my insurance no longer had Ortho as a prefered brand so the price skyrocketed.

As of today, I've called my Doctor to see if there is anyway I can go back on Ortho. Since going on TriNessa I've been aggitated and irritable constantly. It's like I have PMS 24/7 and worse then every before.

I FELT LIKE GOING CRAZY

I used to take Ortho Tri-Cyclen for 3 years which I really liked, but after 3 years I started becoming really nauseated, so I switched to Ortho Tri-Cyclen Low to reduce the estrogen. It reduced the estrogen, but it also made me break out even more, I had my perdiod 3 weeks out of the 4 in a month and I had no idea what was going on with me. Just recently I switched to Trinessa because my insurance does not cover Ortho Tri-Cyclen anymore, so they gave me a generic. Well I'm only on my 2nd week of my first pack and I take it at night right before going to sleep and every morning I wake up with really bad anxiety, a stomach in knots, nausea and sometimes diarrhea. Like someone said before, I feel like I have morning sickness, EVERY morning since I've started this pill. And I think because this pill plays a role on my hormones, the hormones play a role on my brain, which gives me really bad anxiety.

Some side effects from TriNessa

I have also had the mood swings, irritability, mild depression, and constant yeast infections. I have been taking Trinessa for about a year and a half. I have not felt like myself for quite some time. Little things cause me to be irrate. I was on ortho tri cyclen lo before. I am calling my dr. tomorrow to switch back. I am so glad that I found this website!

TriNessa

I too was put on TriNessa BC for insurance reasons, even though my original prescription was filled out for OTC. Same as above, within the first two months of being on TriNessa, I was experiencing major mood swings, migraine headaches, stomach pains, and abnormal bleeding.
I almost felt as if I was going crazy, I would snap at anyone on the street and then bawl within minutes. Never experienced breakouts or weight gain, but was getting hot flashes and a period that lasted 2 MONTHS!!!! 2 Months alone of constant bleeding is enough alone to make any woman crazy. Then to top it all off, my new gyno informed me that I should not have been prescribed Tri in the first place since I get general migraines, i.e. increases the chance of stroke more than with other pills.

Yeast infections, yuck!!

I have had the same problem....I had to change to trinessa because Ortho-cyclen is not paid for by my health insurance. I'ts my second month and started my period 3 days before I was suppose to and it last all 7 day (instead of my normal 3 days), and I got the worse external yeast infection ever. I think I need to stop using this pill. I have also been getting pains all down my legs from time to time.

Yeast infections with trinessa

I have had the same problems with the yeast infections. I kept going to the doctor because the discharge would not disappear. Everytime i went in he would tell me it was a bacteria overgrowth. He gave me Flagyl 3 times and the symptoms would not get better. Eventually it turned into a yeast infection. This has been going on every month for the last 6 months. It just occured to me that it might be my birth control pill, so i went online to investigate. I came across this website and was reading everybodies testimonies and found that almost everybody had the same problem. Now I know that its not me its my pill. Today Im going to call my doctor to switch to a different pill. Hopefully the problem will go away. Thank you very much for sharing your concerns with everybody.

Nauseous on trinessa

I've been on trinessa for a week, i feel so nauseous all day but especially at about the time i'm about to take the pill, i'm going to stick thru with it for about a month, but this feels terrible. does ortho have similar side effects, this is my first time being on any pill?

Diabetes

After reading your post I am kind of concerned about you. I hope you are still checking for replys. I also had yeast infections often. Sometimes as much as two a month. I went to the doctor and found out I am diabetic. My sugar level was well over 500. Please go to the doctor and suggest to him/her that this may be the problem. The longer diabetes goes undiagnosed the greater the risk to your vision, your heart, your mental stability and many of your vital organs. Good Luck and God Bless.

Your sexual partner should be treated for yeast infection

You might want to have your doctor check your sexual partner for a yeast infection. Men usually do not have any symptoms but can have the infection and re-infect you every time you have sex. Happened to me for over 2 years until my partner was treated.

bad side effects of TriNessa

I have been on birth control twice before and I was prescribed for Ortho-Tri Cyclen both times. I never had any problems with this ever.... Here recently i decided to go back on the pill and the pharmacy gave me Trinessa. I started taking it because I thought that my insurance didn't cover Ortho anymore. I have only been on this for a week and a half and i've gained like 7 lbs, my stomach is bloated beyond description, i've been nauseous, my vision has been blurred, and I've experienced numbness along with slight spotting. Now I recently found out that my doctor prescribed Ortho but my pharmacy did what the hell they wanted to. I am going to stop taking this pill right now and start back again next month on the Ortho.

Sore Breasts

I started Trinessa two weeks ago and my breasts started feeling very tender. I had no idea until I started doing research that birth control pills would sore breasts, I've never had a problem with any other brand I've used. I have not yet had any other side effects from the Trinessa but I don't want to wait around and get them. I'm calling my doctor ASAP to get switched!

Decrease in Sex Drive with taking Trinessa

I was switched over to the Generic brand, Trinessa, from the ortho tri-cyclen automatically without notification. Every since I have started to take this pill I have noticed a decrease in my sex drive. I also am very irritable, tired and have mood swings every now and then. I don't remember ever feeling this way on the Ortho Tricyclen. Has anyone else had this type of side effect?

Trinessa

Jenny, I have had a decreased sex drive also! I have had a lot of trouble with my contacts as well. My eye doctor said I have developed tiny bumps under my eyelids. I also have random cramping. I never had any of these problems on OTC. Once I switched to Trinessa I started to have all these problems, but it has taken me almost a year to figure out it was the medication!

I have had a decreased sex drive, my skin has broken out like crazy and I have been feeling depressed! Well, I am glad that I found this site and I am not the only one. I am switiching to OTC and hope to see improvements soon!!!

Switching back to Ortho

I, too, have been experiencing yeast infections at least once a month since I switched from Ortho to TriNessa (due to insurance). Doctors and antibiotics have not been any help either. My husband and I have been eliminating causes for the past few months, and have narrowed it down to the B.C. And then I found this site, thank goodness. I was not informed of a recall either by doctor or pharmacist. I have switched back to Ortho this week, regardless of cost.

My wonderful TriNessa experience!

My turn girls...I've been on TriNessa for 4 years now, and since the first time I've taken it, I've wondered, "Why am I such a raving lunatic when it comes to PMS or my period?" Last year, after a lot of research, I figured out it was the pills. I've definately had mood swings, nausea, and random cramping. But unlike a previous entry I'd read, I DO NOT have a loss in appitite. It's either a GAIN in appitite or I've lost some self-control. A friend of mine said she'd gained weight after being on the pill..but who knows what's the cause! And it's helped with my acne a lot as well, but, I'm taking it with Mino Cycline (which helps with acne). All I know is that I need to find a new form of birth control to take. I don't take birth control because I sleep around or anything, I take it for my acne and regulation of my periods. So, if yal know of any good birth control I could take, please let me know! That's all I have for everyone..

God Bless Ya

H.D.

First Night on TriNessa

Yesterday I went to the doctor and they prescribed me TriNessa. I took my first pill at 8. I also got a little drunk last night but it was only 2 shots and some beer and I rarely ever get hangovers. However this morning I woke up at 6 with the worst nausea I think I have ever had, and after reading the above comments I think it can be attributed to TriNessa. Also, has anyone had any reactions with TriNessa and alcohol? Because I felt absolutely numb and wasted last night from drinking very little

i don't like trinessa....put me back on otc!

i feel like crap right now b/c of these trinessa pills! i had to get online and see what people were saying and it sounds like most of us have the same side effects. i got maybe 2 hours of sleep last night b/c i kept tossing and turning b/c of the painful cramps in my stomach and lower back. i never had these types of side effects when i was on OTC. my doc prescribed otc, but the pharmacy gave me generic instead. i should have spoken up and told them right then and there i wanted the brand name, but didn't. my boyfriend is a pharmacist, and he said i shouldn't have switched like i did, b/c once you find a pill that works for you, stick with it! otc works for me, obviously not the trinessa. i had to call the pharmacy today and tell them to change their system notes and put me back on the brand name! i CANNOT continue to deal. it's only been 2 days and i'm going to have to quit it and wait to start back up on OTC next month!

about trinessa

I visited my doctor over a month ago and specifically told him to prescribe me something that could help my bad acne ,so my doctor prescribed me Ortho Tryciclen lo but when I got the pills and went over the little book that comes along with it I never found anything that mentioned that it could actually improve your acne. I called my doctor and they told me that for further questions on the pill call the 1-800 number. they told me that there were not enough researches done on the pill that could actually prove that otc lo worked for acne. So then I called my doctor again and he changed my prescription to just OTC, when I got the pills I decided to save a couple of bucks and get the generic ones instead : trinessa.I started Around 2 weeks ago and I'm not really sure about it because of what I've read about trinessa.maybe OTC (the real one) works better, I don't Know I just want to get rid of my acne and get my menstrual cycles regularly for once and for all!!!!

Substitution of TriNessa

Well it seems like most people are upset with their pharmacies because they have received "trinessa" instead of "ortho-tri cyclen" like the doctor wrote on the prescription, or more likely that the pharmacies have filled it with trinessa without letting them know. well.....if the doctor doesn't specify to fill it brand then the pharmacies fill it automatically generic for everyone.

So from the start the doctor knows that u are going to receive trinessa. yes i find it very weird that trinessa is the generic version of ortho tri cyclen, and they are suppose to work the same but they really don't according to everyone here. I have received several of the side effects mentioned by most of you but I never thought that it could be the pill. And i asked couple pharmacist why i was getting so nasauted, and just felt like i was getting morning sickness for about 2 weeks, and the first thing they told me is, "u might be pregnant". but that wasn't the case even.

Anyway, that was back in november or december. Things seemed to clear up until recently. I missed 2 pills in the 2nd week and received my period, and i've still got spotting and it hasn't gone away and its been about a week, and i dont know if i should just wait it off or go see the doctor immediately??? there's couple other concerns i have that i wish someone would help me explain, i've never really experienced this. If there is anyone that knows anything about infections please email me at marysienka01@hotmail.com.

WTF? Side effects of TriNessa

OMG...I am so glad I found this website. I have had bad acne, bad cramps, mood swings, extreme cravings for food, unmotivated, weakness if I don't eat constantly, yeast infections, blurred vision, hair loss, and facial hair growth...all since I started taking this horrible pill. I transferred to WA from CA and I transferred my persciption as well, well when they gave me TriNessa and it was cheaper, I was ok with it, and I have had such a hard time with this, that I just stopped taking them a week ago, I knew it was the pills! I have also had digestive issues and shortness of breath. I thought I was just having a body change from the climate and things like that, but what the hell, why is this damn pill being switched on everyone? I hate it. I will have to go to a doctor out here and change my perscription. What a freakin nightmare. I have been on this crap for 8 months!

Ms.

I thought something was wrong with me. Who can we contact to get this OFF the shelves or at least inform women about this. Doctors do not talk to patients enough I think. I was never told of any possible side effects or asked if it was ok to switch my birth control.

I started out with OTC when I got a steady boyfriend. The next year my doctor just switched me to trinessa without saying anything. I don't know why because I have no insurance and pay my way myself -- OTC is only $10 more no biggie. I didn't say anything because I thought it was the same. Until this website confirmed my suspicions. I think I should have known -- does generic ibuprofen work the same as Advil --no not to me, but we trust our doctors and pharmacists.

Now looking back my problems started at the time of the switch. I have gained 65lbs. in about 3 years-- I have always liked and had a problem with sweets and weight, but now it's like I can't control myself or ever get enough. Like being an alcoholic. My sex drive is now non-existant. Me and my boyfried used to have sex about 3 times a day and now in the past year we have had sex around 10 times. I don't want sex at all-- I thought it may have been stress, weight gain, or/and the pill, but now I think it may have been the brand from reading everyone else's side effects.

It was so bad, I decided to stop taking the pill, and almost immediatly I detected a change. I had been crying almost every day and I thought it was stress and depression. When I stopped taking trinessa the everyday crying stopped right away. It was very dramatic. My libedo came back somewhat-- I am afraid I will never have the sex drive I had before -- I am hoping if I lose weight it will help.

I decided to get on the pill again and again I was given trinessa. Reading everyone's comments, I want to get back on OTC. How can we get trinessa off the market? Doctor's should ask what we want put in our bodies-- I want the name brand. I buy Advil and Tylenol for a reason -- better quality. I have now put a low quality drug in my body that I think has now altered the way my body works. Someone should be accountable for giving us all substandard drugs.

Numbness

I took trinessa after my son was born. I started to feel depressed, I thought it was because I was overwhelmed having two kids. I then started to get stomach aches all of the time and felt dizzy but I thought thay may have been because I wasn't eating a lot or drinking enough water, it wasn't until I got a very bad headache, eye pain and numbness in my face that I knew something was wrong. I won't tell you the drama I had with the Italian ER but I went to a military hospital and the doctor ordered a MRI. I stopped taking the pills and I feel 90% better, My belly aches have stopped I am so much happier and active. I still have some pain in my eye and have to wait for the results. I think I am going to have to stay clear from birth control until something newer and safer comes out.

After three months

Alright, so everyone is having some seriously bad side effects. Personally, I don't have many of them at all. The doctor explained all these things to me before perscribing the pills. Spotting is normal for the first three months. Its jsut your body adjusting to the drugs.

The only real problems I had like feeling sick and having headaches went away after the first three months. Now my period is always the same day, and is usually only three days long. I actually started breaking out less, and I found out if you take the pills before bed you don't notice the side effects as much. (Its just easier for me to remember to take them in the morning.)

I've only ever been on TriNessa, and I probably won't change. Weight gain, nausea, headaches and spotting are all normal birth control side effects. (And personally, my sex drive is basically the same as before) But I don't know what to tell you about yeast infections....

Haven't had any problems...

I was switched from Ortho Tri-Cyclen to Trinessa 28 after my OGBYN incorrectly informed me that they were no longer making Ortho Tri-Cyclen after Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo was introduced to the market. Instead of finding yet another pill that wouldn't cause spotting like a lower dosed pill had done to me prior to using the Ortho Tri-Cyclen, I simply had the prescription filled generically. I had no changes at all to my monthly flow on Trinessa 28, and because I am adament about taking the pill every day as prescribed, I do not have out of schedule menstruation problems.

I did gain the obligatory weight/water retention associated with hormonal birth control methods, which started while I was taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen, but other than that, I luckily haven't had any side-effects. I have been taking Trinessa 28 for over a year and a half. I am also past the 30 years old mark, and have only been taking oral contraceptives for 3.7 years.

I do not provide this information to refute anyone else's experiences with Trinessa 28 oral contraception, but to let other readers of this site know that not everyone has these reactions to this particular drug so do not panic if you are currently taking this medication. However, if you are experiencing problems and persistent side effects from taking Trinessa 28, contact your physician immediately and discontinue the use of Trinessa 28 until you speak with a health care professional.

I thought it was just ME(or that's what the DR said)

I was browsing around the internet to see what my different options are for birth control when I found this blog. I have been off of it going on 4 months now & decided to get back on it to regulate my period. Since I was a teenager(1994), I was on brand name Orthro then when I had my 1st child(1996) Orthro-tricyclen came out I swithced to that. Now during this whole time I had no side affects that to my knowledge were bothersome. In 2004, I had my 2nd child & because I was on state insurance they did not cover Orthro so my doctor prescirbed Trinessa, telling ym that its the same thing. From 2004 to Sep of 2006 I took this pills with drastic changes. My eyesight got worst, have chronic dry eye, I started getting dark freckles all over my face that grew from a spot to the size of a quarter, & worst of all I have chronic yeast infections. I go to th ob/gyn about every 2 months to have them tell me that it's because I'm overweight that this is happening & that maybe my hygenie is less than...WTF! Nystatin, yogurt, diflucan, & clotrimazol does nothing. The DR has had me rotating on all of those for almost 2 years. I finally stopped taking Trinessa when my insurance ran out & within the 1st 2 months the dark spots a have lightened to a mere freckle & my eyes are doing I little better. However my yeast infection that came back in Sept & I went to have the same medicine prescribed again(this turn is Nystatin) came back ta few weeks ago & has gotten worse. The discharge can only be described as dark brown PHLEGM with a tinge of blood. I have found a new DR & hope that she can tell me if this is caused by 2 yrs of improper treatment or a side affect from TRINESSA.

GLAD THAT ONE RESPONSE IS GOOD

Well I'm just glad that at least one response is not bad. I was just prescribed my birth control pill and I was being money conscious when I agreed to do generic. i recently started taking trinessa aswell for about a month now ever since then i get bad headaches, poor apetite, stomach aches & even yellow spots on my skin ( mainly chest & neck). not sure if it's actually trinessa that is causing this but from what i read must be so! i think i will ask for a switch i do not like the way this pill makes me feel.

Side Effects are horrible

I am so glad to find this website. I was on Ortho Tri for 8 years and after I had my baby my pharmacy changed it to Trinessa. The first week of the pill I am so nauseated and then I get horrible headaches. I have been on trinessa for 7 months and in the last 3 months I have been going to the doctor repeatedly for vaginal yeast and bacteria infections which I never had before and I also have had a very low sex drive as well. I get terrible rashes as well all over my body. I will be going to the doctor to change my pill. This is a life saver, because I keep trying to figure out what is changed in my life and this is the only change. It is horrible to be this miserable they need to take it off the market.
